I use deadmanssnitch.com for this purpose. I call them after every successful cron. If that doesn't happen for X amount of time I get a notification.
I also did a postcast and hosted in on Soundcloud, website was hosted on GitHub pages. I think we paid 100$ p/y for SoundCloud.
It's a little sound board, from a toy store. But it has all kinds of fun sounds. I can't find it online unfortunately.
