New computer - what's the first application you install?

For me it's a launcher like Alfred. Then I install VSCode.

Brew. I don't install anything without it.

Brew can install Brew? ^^

I have it on good authority, that if you install Brew using Brew, you can, break the internet. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqxLm…

That episode always cracks me up!

Chrome and then rails.new

anything else?

Already felt like I was cheating with 2 "first" installs, but @jefftriplett is right: 1Password (homebrew is included in rails.new).

Homebrew and 1Password.

It seems that many of you install brew first. Maybe I should read his doc again :)

Some other useful apps mentioned in here: wip.co/posts/anyone-got-any-g…

For me these days it's Arc. Really enjoy the cleanliness of not having a billion tabs open from yesterday when I start work.

I'm really boring and have Windows. Besides the usual (browser, antivirus software, PDF reader, VPN, Office, Zoom):

  • Basecamp
  • Discord
  • Audacity
  • OBS
  • Jagex (for OSRS 😂)

Everything else is just plug-ins.

This is my entire list of installed apps/binaries besides the default ones that come with MacOS:
Brew
BitWarden
WIP Menubar
NVM & latest LTS nodejs
Golang
Chrome
Spotify
iTerm2
Powerlevel10k (terminal theme)
VS Code
Docker
Insomnia
Discord
WhatsApp
Telegram
Parallels
Steam (I operate a Rust game server over at #dynamicrust, and occasionally need to hop on to handle a player issue - I don't game anymore now that my only computer is a MacBook Pro)

Everyone keeps telling me I need some new fancy launcher (Raycast?) but I don't see the point 🤔
