Question
Engagement on WIP.co too low?
Hey, my people,
Do you feel like engagement on the platform is very low?
I don't see any serious and interesting discussions happening here.
Am I doing something wrong?
Would love to hear you thoughts.

I don't use wip for discussions but rather to post my work and stay accountable. It works so well for my business that I ended up sharing what I eat to stay accountable to my diet.
For discussions I notice people are more active on telegram
Interesting! Do you get much engagement on your status updates?
I feel that, for now, it's my motivation that helps me keep on track and not accountability to the 🔥 emoji.
It's actually kind of nice not to worry about engagement. On X you want your post to do well to beat an algorithm. Here you just post whatever. It's mostly for you, but it's also interesting to see what people are doing.
Wouldn't you be more motivated if somebody left a comment on your update or just left a like?
I think the meaning of engagement is polluted with what people are trying to achieve on X or other platforms. What I mean by engagement on WIP is just that people see and acknowledge what you do, but also kind of push you to become better.
People post so much updates here, including the smallest life updates so it's impossible to like everything (i usually leave a couple likes in a day)
People do see your posts. There is no algorithm AFAIK.
I personally get motivation from posting. If people like or comment on my stuff great but not required.
But, if somehow people stopped posting then it would feel like I post stuff on the void so it wouldn't be motivating any more.
All I can say is that basing your motivation or happiness on if someone is liking your posts is a shitty way to live regardless of which platform you’re on
I don't get the question. What do you mean by engagement?
same
Yeah, same here, keeps me accountable.
Also seeing others shipping motivates me a lot.
I don't post here for engagement. Just to share updates, see what others are up to, and conversations will take place either offline, via the telegram group, or off platform.
Also, I think a lot of people also post their updates without accessing the platform, via the wip extension for mac, or via the telegram bot
which mac extension?
@jesse this one: github.com/marckohlbrugge/wip…
TIL thanks!
Well... It didn't seem to work. Auth doesn't seem to happen right. Same problem as here github.com/marckohlbrugge/wip…
ah yes -- it looks like it's no longer active.
Marc is pointing towards the Raycast extension now: www.raycast.com/marckohlbrugg…
I haven't tried this yet
I think it's just a mathematical inevitability based on the incentive structure of wip. It's an invite only community with roughly 3000 makers and everything is geared towards posting once a day to keep you accountable.
Assume everyone posts once per day 100% of the time you now only have 3000 people to interact with 3000 posts, and because sorting is in chronological order you're unlikely to see the majority of those posts. There will be no Pareto distribution where hot topics come up.
Additionally everyone here seems busy building, I know I am. I really want to interact with more people here (and I will in due time) but I want to build my product 10x more.
Good point! Thank you for the comment.
I just use it for posting my "work in progress" - and new features I'm adding to my projects.
It is a good balance to X.
I have to really to get a lot of stuff muted on X for it to be useful. I’ve started using 🦋 a week ago. Seems that some tech people are starting using it because X has become too much lately with elections and other things.
Bluesky and Threads are SO much better (calmer, not as chaotically charged) than Twitter. I hope Twitter sticks around, though, so those other platforms don't turn into dumpster fires.
After banning and muting half of the influencers talking about politics it became usable again.
And also all the influencers in general lol
Ok. I think that I need more data points to make up my mind what value does this platform bring me 🤔
It's a pretty exclusive community, I personally feel very lucky to be involved. @levelsio brought this place to my attention through an indie hackers podcast and I'm very grateful to be a part of it.
Genuine question: Why did you decide to join if you didn't see the value on the first place?
I think one cannot say a priori that something will be valuable.
We try and see how things play out.
I will continue using the platform, reflecting on my experience and posting about it along the way.
It seems that people were interested in sharing their thoughts on this as well.
I think it's not about the data, but about the sense of belonging to "the tribe" and accountability.
