A/C's that don't require breaking walls / professional installation under 1k€ ?

Hey WIP'lers!

I want to buy an a/c for next summer for my Berlin home and am researching ones that don't require professional installation or cost much more than 1k€ and wanted to know if anyone has recently baught one they are happy with?

I'm gauging at Midea Portasplit, but am still in the process of researching.

Thanks!

I don't have one, but I would walk through your street, spot any (similar) house with a A/C unit, ring the door and ask them.

The big problem with all these "no install" ones is that you usually need to leave a window or door half open to get rid of the warm air. Which really reduces efficiency because the warm air can get back in the house through the gap.

yeah I totally get that, but as I don't own my place, I don't want to invest too much and go through the process of asking he landlord etc.

Ah, I didn't read this comment before writing my answer. Indeed, a traditional A/C requires in all cases to cross the interior wall to pass the cables.

You might want to consider the Airton brand, which offers affordable air conditioners. They hold a patent on a mechanism that eliminates the need for professional commissioning (they call their solution "ready clim"), which is usually mandatory:

airton.shop/products/climatis…

Their prices start well below €1,000, though you’ll still need to install it like any other air conditioner. I haven’t personally used Airton products, but I’ve heard positive feedback from others.

Regarding installation, I recently installed an air conditioner from another brand myself (without commissioning, which isn’t necessary for Airton units). If you’re somewhat handy, the process isn’t too difficult. You’ll need some basic tools and supplies, such as an electrical cable, wire stripper, screwdriver, and cable ducts.

I had one with the tube that goes out of the window around 7 years ago, and it was absolutely terrible. I couldn't close my window, it was extremely noisy, it was constantly leaking, and it didn't cool that much, to be honest (partly because the window was open as well). Maybe there is a better model nowadays, though, but make sure to check the reviews.

I'm not sure what the costs are for proper ACs in Berlin, but here in the Netherlands, they cost around €2k-€2.5k. I'd rather overpay a bit but get an adequate AC.
Also, try to install it in winter, they usually way cheaper.

Another route that I decided to take eventually is a hybrid heat pump (it still requires drilling into the wall) and a standing AC unit, which connects to your radiator, so no drilling is required (www.quatt.io/quatt-chill). In that case, you would also replace most gas usage with electricity.
