Why can't I use the WIP community without a pro subscription?

I have noticed that there are people who don't have a Pro subscription but still post to the WIP community. However, when mine expired, I wasn't able to access it. 
Are they grandfathered? And now it's only paid?

Yes, site used to be free (and paid, but you didn't get pro benefits if you didn't pay). People that were around before the change got grandfathered in.

Yes that's correct.

WIP used to be invite-only with the PRO subscriptions being optional. But that wasn't a sustainable model (not enough people upgraded to PRO), so I had to make a change and switch to a paid-only model.

Existing members were still able to continue to use the "free" plan with some limitations.
