Question
What are your thoughts on Buildspace? Have you done it?
https://buildspace.so is kicking off season 5 soon. Did a quick search of WIP and saw a few people tried the previous seasons. As a concept I love the idea of building something over 6 wks and demoing it to others in a small community + getting some guaranteed feedback (I mean, that's basically what I'm doing on my own anyway)
That said, I've been thinking about applying, but my gut is telling me not to do it. I thought about why I got that instant, visceral reaction in the "don't do this" direction and I think it's that:
1. I hate that "all lowercase, way 2 cool 4 u" style of copy text. It might sound weird, but as soon as I saw that the website was intentionally lowercased across the board, I instantly lost trust as it comes across like the author thinks he's better than everyone else. I also don't like how some of the FAQ answers are worded in this similar sort of awkward, amateurish writing style.
2. I have to ask why VCs are funding a program for bootstrappers to the tune of $10M and what kind of data they're getting in return. There's no privacy policy listed, so there might be some angle to this where all of the data from the program gets sold to VCs and recruiters for various purposes that I wouldn't approve of. Then again, maybe not - but I always question the motives for getting that much VC funding upfront for something that shouldn't require $10M to operate at scale.
Then again, I could be completely wrong and reading too much into this as I have a tendency to do that sometimes.
I'd really like to hear from people who have done it before for that reason. What are your thoughts?

from looking at the website it seems like a guy's passion project that the VCs are funding as lead-gen/marketing, like Indie Hackers getting bought by Stripe.
IMO you're already killing it with your execution, I don't see what you think you'd get from something like that.
Thanks! Yeah, I don't have a problem with execution, just distribution at the moment given I have ~350 X followers (active) and ~1.5k LinkedIn (most of them are inactive or recruiters that don't want to buy anything, my engagement on X is similar with ~1/4 the followers).
I'm basically only considering it for additional eyeballs on my products - on top of the usual cold emailing and outreach I'm doing myself ofc.
I feel like it won't attract the kinds of eyeballs you're interested in, but idk. I think it's interesting that even Pieter with his huge following seems to be basically largely reliant on a good domain and jumping on a trend to get traction. Like, I don't get the sense that he's really successful based on his following the way someone like Mr. Beast is.
Also are you working from a coworking space? I'm thinking of going up to Bangkok to check it out.
Right, not super convinced it'll bring any useful attention either. Having a useful product related to current trends is definitely more important, although it can't hurt to have followers and such
The reason I say that is because people tend to buy the founder and not the product sometimes. A few of my products made sales because people simply wanted to support me
And yeah, I work out of coworking spaces roughly 3 out of 5 weekdays. My favorite so far is True Digital Park followed by Paper Plane Project, meeting a WIPer at PPP tomorrow actually. Feel free to stop by if you're in town
I feel like the copy is definitely directed at a younger generation (young gen Z), so I just figure it not for me because I've never been one of the cool kids. I'd probably get sick of it after a while, but that alone wouldn't likely turn me away if I really thought I could benefit from it.
My reservations about something like this would be:
1.) Your second concern. Just reading your commentary on it raised so many red flags.
2.) Lack of directed focus. Things that aren't properly niched and then promising "the right eyes on it" make me pause.
For example: Ship 30 for 30 is for people to write online, specifically Twitter, for 30 days. That's it. Everyone is there to write on Twitter for 30 days, so it's easy to show real support to those people (by engaging with their posts). Everyone's goal is aligned.
Even my Pitch Play is focused on pitching, whether it's cold email, a letter of introduction, a proposal on a freelance board, a grant, etc. I'm there to show people how to write an effective pitch, and that's it.
There's specificity in those things that doesn't seem to exist in Buildspace (from what I can see from their home page). How can you possibly help someone build literally anything? How can someone (or even a group of people) be an expert in everything? It just doesn't make sense to me. There's a way to do it (like create small pods of people building similar things or people who are interested in what everyone else in their pod is creating), but there's no way to predict who will sign up.
It seems like they're relying on hype more than anything, and I'm very wary about challenges/programs like that.
Going back to you, it sounds like Buildspace is created for people who need accountability to execute, which isn't your pain point. I don't see you getting much, if anything, out of it.
It'd be way better to spend your time on audience building, growing your referral network, and getting in front of the right people through cold emails/LOIs.
Thanks, I tend to agree. It’s a free program, and I always assume free means I am the product in some way. I’m dubious on the benefits, but figured it would be good to hear from those that tried it too.
To be fair, I haven't tried it. Just my impressions based on a 2-minute glance at their website.
Btw are you in Small Bets? I joined a few months ago and haven't had the space to explore/engage much, but if you're in that community, I'm sure they either have trainings on how to distribute your products OR you can request a training like that.
If you're not, I can find almost anything and would be happy to go on the hunt for you.
I thought about joining small bets too at some point - they at least have clear lectures and value that they offer. Just don’t think it’s worth my $185 right now heh.
That’s kind of you to offer, thanks Cat - I genuinely think I just need to continue cold emailing and posting where my customers are. Let me know if you see any useful resources but no need to go out of your way.
Yeah that's expensive. I got in during their winter sale, so it was like 50-60% off 😂
You're welcome to join my free pitch community on Telegram. I'm actually working on building a Notion tracker template for them now.
I'm in the B2B SaaS space (because I write for B2B SaaS companies lol), but it'd be good to know (1) who your customers are and (2) what your products are, just so I can tuck it in the back of my mind if I come across anything relevant to share with you.
Thanks! At the moment, targeting medium to large discord and telegram community owners, particularly those with toxic communities for #watchdog
Feel free to send me your telegram, and maybe you have a use for Watchdog yourself considering you’re a community owner. Let me know if you ever want to give it a shot.
My community is baby and expect it to stay small since I'm only sharing it with people I know/am connected with.
I'm reopening Brandcrafters Guild (paid membership) soon, and as that grows, I'll definitely want something to manage people. Is Watchdog only for Telegram?
PS Here's the link: t.me/+Dh4TfBGEv0g4MDVh
Makes sense, thanks. Telegram, and Discord integration coming soon. Which platform is the guild on?
Mighty Networks now, but I might look into a WordPress integration.
Got it, ok. Haven't heard of Mighty Networks but if you'll find value out of this and they have a developer platform, I'm happy to build an integration.
After getting most of the way through the Discord integration, I now have a pretty quick framework for adding new ones.
Here's the website so you can see if the pricing and offering makes sense for you: watchdog.chat/#pricing-section
I'd check out:
Mighty Networks (Established and lots of creators use this, especially since they partnered with Convert Kit)
MemberVault (Established and I personally know the owners. I'd be happy to make an introduction.)
Circle (Also established and a LOT of big brands use this because they have so many features. The coworking community I'm in (Caveday) and Futur Pro by Chris Do use it.)
heartbeat.chat (More reminiscent of Discord. I'm in a few communities here, and I created an account to see if it'd work for me. It's promising.)
Bettermode (It attracts larger brands' communities with it's white labeling)
Heartbeat
I have a LOT more LMS and community-based SaaS companies on my lead list since these are the kinds of companies I love writing content for.
Seriously, just let me know. I'd be happy to share.
What I think could be valuable for you is creating a connection with the founders of these companies (of the LMS/communities) and creating some kind of enterprise-level offer as well as selling to server/community owners on a smaller scale. You're savvy, though, and have probably already thought of that lol.
Yea, I've had a few people reach out and tell me they needed more than the plans offer. I'm just going to make a custom plan as needed for enterprises!
Really smart idea!
They could either white label the service (or offer it as an add-on to their plan) to where it comes included for their customers.
Positioning it as a way to keep communities safe is a good way to get attention, I bet.
and yea, happy to have more leads. Let me know if any of those community owners are willing to chat! Thanks Cat.
I can reach out to my friends (founders of MemberVault) and ask.
For the others, sending an LOI would be a great way to start a conversation.
PS My Telegram offers accountability and support for that ;)
Yep, totally - happy to do the work of reaching out myself, but if you have any friends that you think would be a good fit I'll gladly take a warm intro. Thanks again!
Are you on Facebook? I know it's not people's favorite platform, but it took me less than 5 seconds to find these.
It might be worth checking them out for potential leads.
Yup - Discord is pretty straightforward as they have a server directory sorted by # of active users and I've been getting a good response rate. I'll check out FB if I run out of leads though, thanks!
Also, are you kidding?! I LOVE a good distraction to avoid the mounting stress of work 🤣
I signed up a few weeks ago. Total app noob, no audience to speak of on twitter or here, but I am a member of Ramen Club in London for about a year.
The general vibe is a bit young (I'm 54, so not expecting much in the way of connection), and the platform leans heavily toward younger users and fostering connection between them. The much touted 'ai' at the heart of the platform is constantly recommending other people to talk to.
While they don't say so, the funding is clearly designed to drive VC money and attention toward early stage founders - they essentially get access to thousands of new projects every year for not much investment. Probably much faster than going through thousands of pitch decks - the members are constantly pitching to each other!
There's also farza's interest in building a global learning platform and he's experimenting with Buildspace as a mechanism to build at scale and test it.
I'm looking at it as a point of interest. Will I build a big following? nope. Will it inspire me to build out my app faster? Possibly - I'm deep into learning everything I can at the moment, so I'm seeing this as just another channel to pick up knowledge. BUT - even the general tone of the content and site is aimed at much younger people than me. We'll see.
