I think search could belong in the header. Perhaps in the center. I don't think people will discover it in the more menu. Would be cool if you extended it in future to be work like the wip menu bar app as well, so if you are logged in you could create/complete todos from it.
Yes, definitely want to move it to a more prominent place. Top bar seems reasonable.
Love the idea to add /commands to it. We already have a compose option on the homepage (or anywhere on the page by pressing N), but integrating it into that always-visible search bar would make it more discoverable.
