.Net or Hyphen .com?

7 letter domain .net available? Or do I go for the hyphen dot com version? I hate hyphens.

.net.

It's still brandable. You just have to put in a little extra effort to brand it, but it doesn't get penalized from an SEO standpoint. Plus, hyphens are harder for people to remember and adds friction.

Also, make sure the .com version of your .net domain isn't a direct competitor because you'll lose a LOT of traffic that way.

Strong branding = strong SEO. And the reverse is too too.

Thanks! So it sounds like domain extension takes a far back seat to product quality.

Product quality is important, of course, but brandability is also critical.

Can you be THE thing you do/offer to where you become synonymous with the thing (we don't say we're searching for something; we google it) -- can your domain name occupy rent space in people's minds and be remembered when people need to solve the problem your product solves?

And can it be discovered through search, which is why I asked about SEO and if that 7-letter domain name is/has a high-traffic keyword.

You still need a strong brand, but while you're brand building (takes a long time), you're still getting traffic from people's searches they're already making.

You also want to make sure the .com version of your .net domain isn't a direct competitor or you'll have an uphill battle diverting traffic from them and you'll likely lose, especially if they're established.

A high-quality product that does what you claim and that solves real people's real problems is a given.

The other stuff I'm talking about is strategy and assumes you've already created something worth buying.

I really appreciate the explanation. Thank you for this!

You're welcome!!

One of the biggest issues I see with people's strategy & marketing is they think their differentiator is that it's a good product. Mayyyybe in some cases, sure, but 99%, that doesn't cut it.

Always glad to help a fellow WIPer not make the same mistake 🙌🏼

What's the domain? Sometimes hyphens work, sometimes they don't

Yeah, I figured since it wasn't shared, OP was a little squirrely about sharing it before securing it.

I wanted to ask too though 😹

Domains are usually worthless so it's probably worth less than OP thinks it is either way, so I asked haha

Most are, but if it's a brandable domain where OP can siphon existing traffic from leveraging keywords in the domain, it could be worth it if OP is willing to put in some serious time/effort.

famcore.net is the domain or fam-core.com

I vote for dot net in this case. Seems to flow better for my brain 🤷‍♂️

Definitely .net.

I also looked up the .com and you don't have to worry about the competitiveness factor since it's not being used. You're good on that!

I hate .net even more than hyphens.
Just buy both and share the name here so we can help decide :)
For example I own both srefmidjourney.com & sref-midjourney.com but made the hyphen one primary as it seemed more readable.

I personally don't think EITHER hyphen or .net are worth the trouble. Better to go back to the drawing board and come up with an available .com

Add a prefix or suffix if necessary.

If this is an option and you're not completely set on the name and haven't sank in time and money to develop assets, I second this.
