Looking for a hardshell suitcase with a front pocket to hold my extra tech (eg. portable monitor)
Hello community!
I've got a question: I'm looking for a hardshell suitcase with a front pocket to hold my extra tech.
Some context:
When I DN, I like to travel light: 1 day bag (a Nomatic Navigator 15L) and 1 40L carry-on suitcase. I recently bought some extra tech that brings a bit more comfort to my work setup, but that's too large/heavy to fit in my day bag.
That extra tech is:
- 1 SOTSU 16' portable monitor (all metal, a little bit "heavy")
- 1 5G mobile router (a little bit large too)
They all fit in a Nomatic Tech Case bag (about 17 inch of size). That makes it a 3rd bag to carry with me (my day bag, my carry-on suitcase, and this tech case).
That setup is perfect when I travel by car or bus or train, I can bring 3 bags no problem with me. However, when I'll travel by plane again I'm unsure how I should bring it with me.
I've identified some carry-on suitcases with a front quick-access compartment for a laptop and some tech, which adds a bulge on the suitcase. It worries me that the suitcase might not be accepted as carry-on by some airlines since it's now bigger. Given that there will be a screen inside, I don't want the suitcase to go to checked-in luggage (I'm pretty sure the screen will end up compressed through the suitcase and then destroyed).
Anyone in a similar situation, traveling with portable monitors that do not fit in their day bag?
- Any hardshell suitcase with front compartment to recommended that would protect the screen against pressure if the suitcase is compressed/gets shocked;
- Did anyone try traveling with a 3rd small carry-on, above the 2 cabin items limit? (do airlines say anything?)
- Also, do airport security ask you to place your portable monitor in a tray, or can you leave it inside of its bag? (I want to keep airport security process as smooth as possible)
Easiest fix of course would be... to buy a bigger day bag of course, but I don't want a bigger and heavier backpack. I'll use that portable monitor as a permanent work station in my Airbnb, so I won't need it to go to coworkings.

For the hardshell suitcases, I did some digging on Pack Hacker.
- Horizn Studios M5 Smart
- LEVEL8 Road Runner Carry-On (I have a suitcase Level8 the Voyager 28", it's good)
- Away Carry-On with Pocket
For the cabin items limit, I would not go with a third one hoping it will be free :) It's usually one under the seat, one above the head.
For the airport security, they always ask me to put my computer and place it on the tray unfortunately. But maybe in Asia, it's different.
Thanks Julien will dig!
