I never had such a budget for a domain, therefore I usually write down a bunch of options and check which one is available 😅 (.com mostly)
Usually researching similar sites in your niche and writing their domains down can help you brainstorm and get more ideas.
For sure this is lot of money, that's why I have a doubt. I think .com is a really cool invest. My domain have 6 characters. Easily to remember. Name makes sense and target value.
if I'm making money from the site/app already and want to double down on it I would purchase it. already done the same with composables.com which started as.co
my fear is that the price of the domain will rise because my product exist. I don't know if another project with domain name are checked...
AFAIK the price is controlled by the domain owner and it is almost never fixed. you can negotiate the price with them. i wouldnt be too worried about the price going up because of this. they want to sell, you want to buy. find an agreement.
if for any reason you two don't find an agreement change the domain slightly. (ie instead of appname.com go with getappname.com or similar)

Have you validated the project somehow?
And are you 100% sure on the current name?
If both are yes, then maybe! It's a lot of money otherwise
I got lucky and got my .com for $20 after it expired though
If it's making money or if you have validated the idea go for it (depends on how much your project is making and it's potential) . If not then you can wait.
Seems like you haven't launched it yet. The .com is available for sale so you can start with other extensions and buy it later on.
Other option is to see if you can find a new name with available .com.
You can also check whois and find out when it was registered, when it's expiring, since when the domain owner is holding the domain. Depending on the info if its expiring soon and you think it might not be renewed then you can wait and get it for $10 when it expires.
Launch, see if it grows and only then buy the .com. Btw $700 is cheap for a six letters .com.
