How can I improve the landing page of my app?

Hello there, WIP buddies πŸ™ƒ

For the last couple of weeks, I've been spending my after work time on building Talk To Locals: the service that helps you in a situation when you need to speak to another person in a real life, but you don't have a language in common

The app is finally completed (-ish) πŸ˜„ I'd not call this launch just yet, but I'm almost there: the most critical bugs have been (hopefully) fixed, the deployment flow is set, 3rd-party APIs credits added.

I'm starting the marketing effort now by polishing SEO, and other things, so I'd really appreciate honest opinions about the landing page of the project:

https://talktolocals.ai

Things that I know are missing there:
- testimonials: well, I don't have any users yet, and I'm not in favor of fake reviews, therefore the section is not there. I'll add it once I manage to find beta testers that are willing to exchange the reviews/feedback for the free minutes of the service.
- link to social media: I haven't created X/Fb/Instagram/youNameIt accounts yet

Please let me know if you have any ideas, feedback, suggestions, or any other opinions on the landing page.

Have fun,
Myko

Honestly? I love it. I also read your blog, and that's where it really pulls it all together (especially your Spanish restaurant and Max stories).

You had me at "no fake reviews" because this is all too common, and it kills trust quicker than anything. I bet you could join more digital nomad communities and partner with language-learning or traveling companies to get real reviews.

I didn't run any SEO audits or anything on your page, so I don't know from that angle (I can quickly if you'd like though), but right now? I like that it's so simple and to the point. The people who likely need this product most don't necessarily care how it works, just that it does.

I'd use it, but I'm B2 and high A2/low A1 in two languages that you have that I speak (and the language I'm currently learning isn't supported), and I'd only use it to talk with native-level (C1+) speakers without actually going to the country to use it in a way you'd probably want this tested. It'd just be friends talking about random things.

I love this, though, and I'm in several large language-learning communities/Discords, and I'd be happy to share it there for people who are traveling. Let me know :)

PS If I had to say SOMETHING, I'd say a full demo video of it being used to have an actual conversation in a real-life setting. I could see that kind of thing pop off on YouTube shorts since there are "polyglots" (most are fake lol) starting conversations with random people on the street to show they can speak the language. It'd be cool if you did a spin-off on that.

Hey, Cat πŸ™ƒ

Thanks a lot for taking a look at my website (and even reading the blog!) and for such a detailed comment.

I'm glad to hear that it's not only me who is not fond of fake reviews (these 2 words together sound like an oxymoron to me) πŸ™‚

About sharing in the communities: I'd love that if it's not too bothersome to do. Introvert-be-like, you know...

A full demo video: thanks, that's a great hint, actually. I've been thinking about that a bit, and I do agree it will add the credibility and showcase the tool itself. Will figure out the setup then, thanks again πŸ™‚

P.S. If you ever find a use for this app or decide to try, let me know (here or on X), please, so I'll add additional free minutes to you as a token of appreciation for your time spent of taking a look at my landing page and writing this review.

Hey, Myko!

Yeah, I refuse to work with people (or purchase from them) who pay for reviews, even if it's a sneaky-sneak way, like, "Write a 5-star review and get put in a raffle to win a prize." It's so dishonest.

Fortunately, for you, languages are my special interest so I have no problem bothering people or info dumping about them 🀣 I'll share the link in Evildea's (www.youtube.com/@Evildea) Discord tonight when I do my daily studying update.

For the demo, I'd make it warm, personal, and a real-life scenario, not just showing the app screen (if this makes sense). And definitely not an AI voice saying it (because, again, it kinda destroys credibility and it's silly to spend so much time and money creating something just to cut corners when marketing).

If you add Russian, I'd definitely try it out with a friend who's C2 in the language. (I'm pre-A1.)

If you create a product where it's an AI with voice AND writing functionality that's trained in languages that is essentially like italki but without having to talk to a real person (you know, introvert things lol), I'd 1000% pay for that. It'd have to be pretty advanced to have conversations while also teaching the languages, and I'm not sure if that technology actually exists at the level it'd need to be to pull it off. But hell, I'd do your branding and SEO for free if you made it and let me play with it, though 🀣

"Write a 5-star review and get put in a raffle to win a prize."

Hahaha, a very interesting concept, you know. It's not "write a review", but "write a (exactly) 5-star review" - quite a difference =)

Hehe, lucky me then, thanks again for spreading the word. And it's cool that you like learning new languages, smth I envy a bit, as I mostly learned mine out of need rather like fun projects. I should reflect on that, hehe πŸ˜„

For the demo: you are absolutely right, if I do that, it should be a real video, good point.

If you create a product where it's an AI with voice AND writing functionality that's trained in languages that is essentially like italki but without having to talk to a real person (you know, introvert things lol)

Hehe, actually, you've just described more-or-less the idea that I was working on before I pivoted to the side-quest with the Talk To Locals tool.
I wasn't considering the writing practice, though, only speech one, but that's a very good feedback to consider.

As for "if that technology actually exists at the level", it depends. I tried with a few models, and they are quite good if the target is language practice. However, actual teaching, like "Hey, Cat, you said THIS, but it should have been THAT" is not as good as the human tutor, especially with the speech.
I'll see how far I can get with tweaking it, though.

Nevertheless, it's good to hear that you find such a (future) tool useful, so let's stay tuned: one day (hopefully, soonish, but definitely not before my summer holidays), I might reach out to hear your opinion on the educational part of it, if that's fine - like you said "let me play with it", hehe πŸ˜„

1.) For the reviews, I think it can be a tricky line to walk because people naturally assume it has to be a ~positive~ review to qualify to win. (After all, would we assume if a product sucks, we write an honest review about why that product sucks (giving constructive feedback and not "you suck"), then we win a prize over someone who wrote a glowing (if disingenuous) review? Probably not. The implicit requirement is to write a positive review, even if it's not verbalized. Humans are humans, after all.

2.) Demo: Yep! Depending on your brand vibe, you can go more educational (just straight-up showing people how to use it practically) or comedic (putting together a skit of someone talking to you, being a little over-the-top with having an idea, pulling out your phone, zooming in on just the screen while you show how your app works, then actually using the app to have a conversation. You can do this in easily 60 seconds.

3.) The Google Translate comments from others: This was exactly what I was referencing in my original post when I said the blog clarified things. It's way more valuable (and less intrusive, it sounds like) than Google Translate. It's worth putting that on the home page for people who aren't a little weird like me and read blogs lol

4.) Other language app: What you were describing ("here's what you got wrong, here's what it should be, and why") would be exactly what makes it so valuable. I'm sure in a few years, AI will get to that point, though! They've already made some conversational AIs, though I haven't seen one that's conversational (at a high level) AND written. One day, I hope!

5.) Languages in general: I've been obsessed with languages since before I can remember, and my childhood goal was to learn every language so Starfleet would recruit me to make first contact with aliens. (I've been watching Star Trek since I was 2, so I had unrealistic expectations from the start lol.) Not only am I obsessed with actual languages, but I have a cultural anthropology degree with a linguistics background (and neuropsych degree with a focus on language acquisition), have studied conlangs (Klingon (duh), Esperanto, and most recently Toki Pona), and I create conlangs for games 🀣 You can say it's kinda my thing. I might not know the tech behind how to make something like this works, but I've got the science if you needed help :)

About reviews: while I get what you mean and, tbh, I do agree with that in general, still feels a bit wrong, as

giving constructive feedback and not "you suck"

is both super helpful and takes time to compile.

On the other hand, the context is important: folks on WIP ask for honest feedback about their landing pages, while for some companies these "price for the review" is a pure marketing campaign to increase the visibility and brand awareness. Therefore, the desired outcome is different for those 2 cases.

Demo: thanks for the hints, I'll digest that and start an actor's career, hehe

Google Translate: yes, +42 to this

who aren't a little weird like me and read blogs lol

hehe, that's a cool type of weirdness.

About the language app: when you mentioned

I haven't seen one that's conversational (at a high level) AND written

what did you mean by "conversational and written"? Is it that the app supports both speech-to-speech communication and text chat ones? Or is it about the fact that the speech conversation is transcribed into text and then somehow processed?

Starfleet would recruit me to make first contact with aliens

Honestly (no kidding here), that's one of the coolest motivations I've heard since forever. I see how you came this far with the languages then πŸ™‚

have studied conlangs (Klingon (duh), Esperanto, and most recently Toki Pona),

Wow! Tbh, I've never heard of Toki Pona before, so had to google that one.
Now, I'm curious about 2 things, if I may:
- is Klingon somehow standardized? What I mean that if, let's say, I learn it from the source A, and you - from the source B, would we be able to communicate after all? πŸ˜„ It would be a bummer if the answer is "no"
- Was Esperanto as logically perfect and with no exceptions, as they say?

And, yeah, an impressive education you have.
Starfleet guys, come on, what are you waiting for?

The first question on my mind was "What does this do that Google Translate doesn't?" Because that's the go-to solution for anyone who travels. All my non-tech friends know to use Google Translate. It works and it's free.

So, that's the one objection that you may want to address on your landing page?

yep, agree on this - honestly the response in the blog post was quite compelling, and think it should be on the landing page.

A very good point, Aravind, I should address that on the landing page too.

That's a great question to ask, Carl, thanks. I completely overlooked that, so now I have a homework - great! πŸ˜„

It's beautiful, and the copy is great. But the page doesn't answer questions I really have. Google translate has a speech mode, it's free and doesn't restrict time, why should I use your app instead?

Another thing, the only demo video shows how you select a language but it's probably the least interesting part. What comes next? Again, this might answer how different it is from google translate.

yep audio on the demo video would be nice.

Thanks, Sergei, these are very valid points and something for me to address before the proper launch.

You should put the 10 minutes free more visual

Yes to this, Nicolas, thanks. I see that it's not so visible, despite being a vital piece of info, hehe. Will fix that soon.
